spectapular
I temporarily forgot about beer miles and rocked along to the Local Taphouse's Moose and Mountie (or something) SpecTAPular today.

Lucky I took the newspaper with me, because the useless bastards who I was supposed to meet there didn't show. So I sat in the window by myself and tried a few beers. It was quite nice actually. I'm comfortable with who I am. No, really. But I digress...

This event was noteworthy for the absolutely insane collection of completely obscure Quebecois beers available. I haven't heard of such a crazy list of beers assembled on the complete other side of the world since Andy Neil was threatening to take a bunch of Franconian beers to Singapore. Or any festival in Japan I suppose.

The successes were the IPAs and completely wacky yeast/spice flavours. Trou du Diable's Morsure was probably my favourite - piney US hops have never been so refined. And the staffs' costumes were pretty insane too.

The disappointments - Dieu du Ciel's stouts. Novelty beers the both of them, though well-made I suppose.

Don't forget to join us all for the official ANHC pre-drinks at the Local Taphouse on Thursday October 28 after the AABC judging.

Micro showcase

micro showcaseI hadn't been to a Victorian Microbreweries Showcase in a few years, but the promise of a free ticket (thanks Rory!) was too much to resist. Glad I went, it was a very pleasant evening.

The crowd was a beer marketer's dream - young, well-dressed and probably 30-40% women. (Compare that to our 2008 conference!)

Managed to try Damian's new beers from the Toobarac Hotel, as well as a few True South things I hadn't tried yet.

I also managed to bump into a guy who runs a hostel in the middle of nowhere in the Czech Republic. That was a trip. And I got to rant about how crap Wyeast 3724 is (my favourite pastime) and discuss IPA paradigm shifts. Good times.

Best beers: unfiltered Alpha Pale Ale and Bridge Road Chevalier Saison. A random woman overheard me say that the saison was the best it had ever tasted, and but thought I said it was the best beer I'd ever tasted. It wasn't quite that good.

Barrel-aged beers

barrelaged2The ANHC’s own James Smith had an article in the Epicure the other day on the sudden popularity of barrel-aging with Victoria’s micros.

I love that breweries are taking a risk on such beers, and I do think the concept has promise, but so far I've usually been left wondering how good the beer would've been before they put it in the barrel.

About Us

TV presenter Paul Mercurio and Fosters' Mick Jontef at ANHC 2008
Looking forward to its second conference, ANHC is the brain-child of John Preston, who has attended the American National Homebrew Conference twice and enjoyed it so much he decided he had to have one here. John pulled together a collection of the smartest and best-looking homebrewers in Melbourne to put together the inaugural ANHC in 2008.

A not for profit organisation, ANHC's primary goals are to:

» improve the quality of homebrewed beer,
» raise awareness of homebrewing and quality craft beers,
» share brewing knowledge and experience, and
» provide inspiration, ideas and motivation for you to brew.
