Tourists' Guide: Coffee near William Angliss

E-mail Print PDF

William Angliss is an excellent venue for a conference, but the coffee isn't really a strong point. It's hot and free, but I spent a lot of the last conference thinking about where I could get a decent fix.

My prayers have been answered. Two quality coffee places about a block away from the conference venue.

I'm fairly sure these two weren't open during ANHC2008, but perhaps I'm just not that observant. They're both espresso-only as far as I know, so the siphon/pour-over crowd will have to look further afield.

Shop 7 Espresso is a hole-in-the-wall with about ten seats and a nicely relaxed vibe, though I bet it gets hectic during the morning rush when the lawyers need their hit. The guys here are always up for a chat about coffee or anything, and the food is very much on a quality over quantity basis. They do Five Senses coffee through a Synesso; a house blend and another rotating coffee which rotates so frequently that the blackboard is never up to date.

7/551 Little Lonsdale St.

On appearances you'd never guess that Dancing Goat Cafe is a serious coffee place, but it's run by a 2009 Australasian Champion Barista. They have a house blend from Seven Seeds, plus a rotating feature coffee. The best bit about this cafe is the $2.50 espresso at the bar, which you just don't see often enough in Australia. Perfect for a quick coffee between presentations, really.

4/280 King St

Dancing Goat is about 160m from the entrance to William Angliss, Shop 7 around 200m. Brother Bada Budan is another couple of blocks away.

Based on my limited samplings, Shop 7 has a slight edge in coffee quality and a considerable edge in ambience. But I plan on testing them both out quite a bit more before the conference.

TV presenter Paul Mercurio and Fosters' Mick Jontef at ANHC 2008
Looking forward to its second conference, ANHC is the brain-child of John Preston, who has attended the American National Homebrew Conference twice and enjoyed it so much he decided he had to have one here. John pulled together a collection of the smartest and best-looking homebrewers in Melbourne to put together the inaugural ANHC in 2008.

A not for profit organisation, ANHC's primary goals are to:

» improve the quality of homebrewed beer,
» raise awareness of homebrewing and quality craft beers,
» share brewing knowledge and experience, and
» provide inspiration, ideas and motivation for you to brew.
